Ash Wednesday

Tomorrow, Wednesday the 26th, is Ash Wednesday and marks the beginning of the Lent season, 6 weeks of penitence before Easter. During the six weeks during the Lent season, observers often vow to give something up in sacrifice. Observers of Ash Wednesday also can be distinguished by the ashes they place on their foreheads so that they repent. The 6 weeks of Lent, where the participants “fast” from the thing they have given up, is supposed to emulate the 40 days Jesus went into the desert and fasted despite temptation. Lent officially ends on Easter, and participants will again enjoy what they fasted from for another year.
